You Don't Have To Reinvent Yourself

Hello and Happy New Year!

Every January, we are encouraged to reset everything, start over and become a new version of ourselves. But this year I have been considering the idea of beginning things a little more gently - building on what already works and feels good, rather than focusing on the negative and trying to change everything all at once.

We don’t necessarily need grand plans or sweeping changes. Sometimes it is enough to step forward with intention - just as we are. Care to join me?

A Peak Behind The Scenes

I hope that the holiday season was fun and restorative for you and that your new year is off to a good start. We had a lovely family Christmas in Cambridgeshire hosted by our son Alexander and his partner Hannah. On our return home, we were visited by dear friends with whom we rang in the New Year, dancing up a storm at the Fire and Ice Ball at Phyllis Court in Henley-on-Thames.

And finally my husband Guy, Alexander, Hannah and I all went to beautiful Hambleton Hall in Rutland to celebrate Alexander and Hannah's birthdays, which are a day apart in early January. We had a tiny bit of snow while we were there, which made for a gorgeous view!

Things That Are Bringing Me Joy

Easing into the New Year - Whether it is setting battery operated candles* to come on just as night falls or lighting a scented candle, leaving a throw on my favourite chair to curl up with, making something warm and delicious to drink or preparing food that feels comforting rather than complicated, I'm making self-care a priority. When we look after ourselves, it is much easier to be there for others. (*affiliate link)

Choosing my word for the year - I enjoy choosing a word or theme for the year as a gentle way to stay focused, without placing to much pressure on myself. I have chose UPGRADE as my word for 2026. This choice is not about dissatisfaction - I’m deeply grateful for the life I already have and for the work I do. I simply want to build on what I have already accomplished, what already feels good. I’m ready to take things to the next level, particularly with my writing and my work - and I can’t wait to share the results with you!

Making a 26 for 2026 list - Every year since 2018 I have joined Gretchen Rubin, her sister Elizabeth Craft and the Happier podcast community in this considered alternative to making resolutions. We each create a list of things that we would like to do or accomplish, the same number of things as the last two digits in the year. The aims can be serious or whimsical - and at least one should be so easy that you can tick it off the list almost immediately. My 26 for 2026 list includes making popcorn from scratch (it's been ages since I've done that!), picking up my long abandoned hobby of embroidery by completing a small project, keeping a kitchen diary and enjoying four Afternoon Teas at places that are new to me. You can read more about these lists on Gretchen's website. Let me know if you decide to make one too!

In My Kitchen

I'm making simple, comforting recipes that are nurturing and restorative - and some treats as well, of course!

This week I'm...

in a "wintering" mood (whilst still thinking of those of you starting the new year in summer!). I'm lighting candles early, making soups and stews and embracing a gentle start to the new year.

Reading - The Temple of Fortuna* by Elodie Harper

I'm also re-reading one of my favourite books, Simple Abundance* by Sarah Ban Breathnach, each day in 2026. I first read this book back in 1996 and have returned to it time and time again for inspiration, encouragement and comfort.

Watching - the last few episodes of Emily in Paris Season 5

Listening to - Bewitched*, a beautiful album by new-to-me artist, Laufey. We listened to it over Christmas and I was really taken by it! The songs are inspired by jazz and classical music and Laufey has such a beautiful voice.

Loving - The rechargeable OCOOPA Hand Warmers* my son bought me for Christmas. My hands get cold very quickly and these have been a game-changer for me. Even better, these pretty ultra-slim squares fit easily into a pocket or small handbag. If you suffer from cold hands as I do, I am sure you will love them too.

Looking forward to -

some time at home over the next few weeks, gently easing into the New Year.

That's all for now. I'm off to finally take down the Christmas decorations...or at least make a start!

3 colourful vintage tea cups filled with Gooseberry Fool

Hello! When I was a little girl, afternoon tea meant those wonderful occasions when Mom would get out her Brown Betty teapot, let me choose one of the vintage china teacups from her collection and we would sit down and spend some time together. Mom showed me how to warm the teapot and pour the just boiled water carefully over the teabags. Then we would add just a bit of milk to the china teacups so that the tea didn't cause them to crack. After stirring in just a sprinkle of sugar, we would...

April and Guy Harris on a balcony at the Chateau de Chenonceau

Hello! How are things in your corner of the world? I read recently that it has rained every day in the UK since 1 January. I'm not sure if this is entirely true but it certainly feels like it might be! In books and movies, the weather often suits the mood of the characters or what might be about to happen. It is pretty rare for something amazing to happen in a rainstorm. However, in my experience, some of the best days can be days when the weather is less than perfect. Although my heart sank...

April Harris taking a bite of chocolate cake

Hello! Happy February! I like to think of this month as the time for celebrating all kinds of love - love for our friends, families, partners if we have them, our pets and fellow humans. I also think we need to include love for ourselves - so many of us hold ourselves to standards that are much higher than those to which we hold others. Then we are unkind to ourselves when we inevitably fall short of our unrealistic expectations. Let's take some time to give ourselves a little love, holding...
